Depression — A Fracture of the Mind

Depression is often misunderstood. Many people think it means “feeling sad,” but depression is much deeper. I call it a “fracture of the mind” because, just like a physical fracture makes it hard to walk, a mental fracture makes it hard to think clearly, stay motivated, or work toward goals — even when you want to.

Imagine trying to run a race with a broken leg. No matter how much willpower you have, your body stops you. Depression works the same way — except the injury is invisible.

That’s why I feel that understanding depression is the first step before entering the hard-working or productive stage of life. If we don’t know what is going on inside us, we keep forcing ourselves and end up feeling even more frustrated.

Why I Say “Understand First, Work Later”

  1. When we want results — good marks, good skills, a good career — we try to push ourselves.

But pushing doesn’t work if the mind is struggling.

    •

If you’re mentally exhausted, you can’t be consistent.

    •

If motivation is low, big goals feel impossible.

    •

If emotions feel heavy, even small tasks look huge.

  2. So before entering “production mode,” “grind mode,” or “hard work mode,” you must understand what’s happening inside your mind.

  3. Healing and clarity always come before results.

Check How Depressed You Are — BDI Self-Test

  1. One of the best tools to check your depression level is the BDI (Beck Depression Inventory).

  2. It’s simple, quick, and used worldwide.

Take the test here:   View Test

  3. This test doesn’t label you. It just gives you an idea of where you stand — mild, moderate, or severe depression levels — so you can take the next right step.

  4. The BDI score might show mild or moderate depression.

This simply means you need some emotional attention before expecting top performance from yourself.
